Parish of Broad Clyst, Devon
The registers for the parish of Broad Clyst begin in 1653 with the first record for the Voysey family occurring in the following year. Many of the entries for the family are very rich in supplemental information due to the fact that no less than five successive generations held the post of clerk of the parish. The additional information recorded whilst being unusual adds significantly to its interest and value.
Parish Records
There are in total some fifty recorded baptisms, fourteen marriages and twelve burials for the parish. In addition the following notes appear in volume two of the registers. On the back of the first page is written:-
The 26th day of March 1666 was baptised Mary daughter of Digory Veale, now wife of John Voysey clerk of this parish.
On the following page is written:-
Clement Voysey (bur. 5 November 1685) began his clerkship in the year 1662.
John Voysey (bur. 15 May 1711) son of the above Clement Voysey was chosen clerk in the year of our Lord 1685.
Paul Voysey (Bapt. 21 May 1700, bur. 2 March 1745) son of the above John Voysey began his clerkship 17th May 1719.
William Voysey (bur. 9 April 1794) son of the aforesaid Paul Voysey began his clerkship the 2nd day of August 1747.
